Nana'S Christmas Bread
- 2 c. milk
- 1 c. sugar
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 pkg. dry yeast, dissolved in 1/2 c. warm water
- 2 1/2 tsp. ground cardamon
- 3 beaten eggs
- 1 c. citron or candied cherries
- 1 1/2 c. golden raisins
- 4 to 5 c. flour
- 1 1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. milk
- Heat milk almost to boiling.
- Stir in sugar, butter and salt. Let cool to lukewarm.
- Add yeast mixture and stir in 3 cups of flour.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
- Add cardamon and eggs to mixture.
- Mix candied fruit and raisins with 1/4 cup flour and add to dough.
- Add just enough flour to make soft dough that's not sticky (about 1 cup).
- Knead on well floured board, about 6 minutes.
- Cover and let rise until light, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 450u0b0.
- Grease two 9 x 5-inch loaf pans.
- Punch down dough and divide in half and place in loaf pans.
- Let rise until double in size.
- Bake 10 minutes.
- Reduce heat to 325u0b0 and bake an additional 50 minutes or until brown.
- Combine powdered sugar and milk; mix well and drizzle over cooled bread.
