First Prize Winning, 1776 Flag Cake
- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 2/3 c. sugar
- 1 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 2/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/3 c. water
- 1 c. mayonnaise
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 can white frosting
- blue food color
- 13 miniature marshmallows
- 1 1/4 c. cherry bites (1-inch long each)
- Place flour, sugar, baking soda and baking powder in the baking pan.
- Sift cocoa powder into pan and stir all together. Add water, mayonnaise, eggs and vanilla to the pan; mix well until all the flour is moistened and batter is smooth.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool.
- Place 1/2 cup of the frosting in a small bowl. Stir the food color into the frosting, a few drops at a time, until you like the shade.
- Spread it neatly in the upper left corner of the cake to make a 4 1/2-inch square.
- Arrange marshmallows in a circle on the blue frosting to make stars.
