Applesauce Bars
- 2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 c. sugar
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
- 1/2 c. shortening, slightly soft
- 1/2 c. water
- 1/2 c. chopped nuts
- 1 c. raisins
- 1 (1 lb.) can applesauce (1 3/4 c.)
- 1 egg
- Grease and flour jelly roll pan (10 x 15-inch).
- Start oven preheating (350u0b0).
- Sift flour once; measure and sift with next 7 ingredients into mixing bowl.
- Add shortening, water, nuts and raisins all at once.
- Beat with spoon 2 minutes.
- Add applesauce and unbeaten egg.
- Beat another 2 minutes.
- Pour into prepared pan.
- Bake about 30 minutes or until wooden pick stuck in center comes out clean.
- Frost with Caramel Frosting.
- Cut into bars. Makes 48 bars.
