Tomato Sauce

  1. Heat oil in a large kettle or Dutch oven.
  2. Add onions and garlic; saute 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef; cook until brown, breaking the meat up with a fork until it cooks.
  4. Stir in the remaining ingredients.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cook over low heat until it is thick and rich, 45 minutes to an hour. Remove the bay leaves; skim off the fat.
  6. This makes about 10 cups, plenty for 2 hearty family dishes.
  7. It freezes well.
