Mors Grov Brod(Brown Bread)

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water; let stand 15 minutes.
  2. Add 3 1/2 cups lukewarm water, molasses, salt, sugar and shortening. Add enough flour to make a soft sponge.
  3. Beat thoroughly for about 10 minutes, then add rest of flour to make stiff dough.
  4. Knead, then place in greased bowl, cover and set in warm place.
  5. When doubled in bulk, knead again.
  6. Let rise once more, then shape into loaves.
  7. Let rise until light, then bake about 45 minutes in moderate oven.
  8. Brush tops with melted butter.
  9. Makes 4 medium loaves.
  10. Try adding chopped walnuts to part of the dough for a delicious nut bread.
