Walnut Kolache (Roll)
- 1 pkg. yeast
- 3/4 c. milk
- 3 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3/4 c. ground walnuts
- melted butter
- dried apricots, prunes, jams or nut filling
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 1/4 c. oleo
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3 c. flour
- 1 c. powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp. hot water
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla
- Dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Scald milk.
- Add oleo, sugar and salt and mix well.
- Cool to lukewarm.
- Add egg and dissolved yeast. Stir in 1/2 of flour and beat well until smooth.
- Add 1/2 cup walnuts, then gradually mix in remaining flour.
- Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls onto an oiled baking sheet.
- Brush with butter.
- Let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
- Use a teaspoon to press out a center in the dough which can be filled with jams or apricots or prunes dipped in 1/4 cup ground nuts.
- Bake at 350u0b0 for 25 minutes. Combine powdered sugar, hot water and vanilla and stir until smooth.
- Spread on kolache while it is still warm from oven.
- Makes 1 dozen.
