Traditional Birthday Cake
- 3 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
- 2/3 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. milk
- 1 beaten egg
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 2/3 c. milk
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
- Combine chocolate, sugar, milk and beaten egg in saucepan.
- Cook and stir over low heat until chocolate melts and mixture thickens; cool.
- Stir shortening to soften.
- Gradually add sugar.
- Mix until light and fluffy.
- Add vanilla.
- Add the eggs one at a time.
- Beat well after each.
- Alternately add flour mixture and 2/3 cup milk, beginning and ending with flour.
- Beat after each addition.
- Blend in chocolate mixture.
- Bake in 2 paper lined or greased 9-inch layer pans at 350u0b0 for 25 minutes (more or less).
- Remove from oven when cake separates from side of pan.
