Traditional Birthday Cake

  1. Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
  2. Combine chocolate, sugar, milk and beaten egg in saucepan.
  3. Cook and stir over low heat until chocolate melts and mixture thickens; cool.
  4. Stir shortening to soften.
  5. Gradually add sugar.
  6. Mix until light and fluffy.
  7. Add vanilla.
  8. Add the eggs one at a time.
  9. Beat well after each.
  10. Alternately add flour mixture and 2/3 cup milk, beginning and ending with flour.
  11. Beat after each addition.
  12. Blend in chocolate mixture.
  13. Bake in 2 paper lined or greased 9-inch layer pans at 350u0b0 for 25 minutes (more or less).
  14. Remove from oven when cake separates from side of pan.
