Grandma'S Molasses Apple Butter Stack Cake
- 6 to 8 c. self-rising flour
- 2 c. molasses
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 3 Tbsp. milk or buttermilk
- 1/4 lb. butter, melted
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1 1/2 tsp. allspice
- 1 large jar apple butter
- 1 egg
- To melted butter, add molasses and milk; heat until warm (do not boil). Mix sugar and spices in bowl with 5 cups of the flour; use remaining flour to sprinkle on board and add to dough as needed.
- Make a hole in the center of dry mixture of ingredients; gradually add warm mixture to center.
- Add egg; mix until thick. Knead like bread dough to roll out on board.
- Use small amount of mixture rolled out desired thickness of 1/4-inch. Cut out desired size to fit pan to bake.
- Bake each layer at 325u0b0 for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Check after 10 minutes for doneness.
- Makes 8 layers. Stack layers, spreading tops of each layer generously with apple butter. "Ice" sides of entire cake with apple butter. Let cake "set" for a few days after "icing" with the apple butter. It improves with age.
