Three Cheese Monte Cristos
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 8 slices Gouda cheese
- 8 slices gruyere cheese
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
- 8 slices thin deli turkey
- 8 slices thin deli ham
- 8 slices thick white (French toast) bread
- Dijon mustard
- butter for griddle
- Mix together the first 4 ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together butter, egg, and milk. Add dry ingredients to wet, and stir until flour is dampened. Set aside.
- For each sandwich, spread one slice bread with mustard, and layer with (in following order) 2 slices gruyere, 2 slices ham, sprinkle parmesan, 2 slices turkey, ground pepper, 2 slices gouda, other piece of bread. Repeat for all 4 sandwiches.
- Heat butter in skillet or griddle to medium heat.
- Pour half of batter in shallow dish, and for each sandwich, dip in batter in shallow dish, and pour batter over top to coat. Grill each sandwich- about 2-3 minutes on each side until batter is golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Serve dusted with powdered sugar.
