Irish Soda Bread

  1. In bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.
  2. (If using seed, add now.)
  3. Cut in shortening with pastry cutter or two knives.
  4. Pour in buttermilk; add raisins.
  5. Mix; batter will be very moist.
  6. Turn out onto floured board and knead gently a few strokes.
  7. Shape into round shape.
  8. Cut loaf into quarters, about 1/4 way.
  9. Brush with melted butter.
  10. Sprinkle with sugar; bake at 350u0b0 for 30 to 45 minutes or until light brown.
