California Chocolate Brownies
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. light corn syrup
- 2 sq. unsweetened chocolate, melted
- 2 eggs, well beaten
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 3/4 c. sifted cake flour or regular flour
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. chopped nuts
- 1/2 bag (12 oz. bag) chocolate chips (optional)
- Cream shortening until fluffy.
- Gradually beat in corn syrup until thoroughly mixed and light and fluffy.
- Stir in melted chocolate.
- Add eggs and vanilla.
- Sift together cake flour, baking powder and salt.
- Add 1/4 cup at a time to creamed mixture. Fold in nuts.
- Pour into well-greased 8-inch square pan.
- Bake in moderate oven (350u0b0) 30 to 35 minutes or until slight imprint remains when touched lightly with finger.
- Set pan on rack to cool completely, then sprinkle with powdered sugar and cut into 2-inch squares.
- Makes 16.
