Canadian Brown Bread

  1. Combine the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl and let cool until lukewarm; stir the mixture.
  2. Mix the yeast, lukewarm water and sugar and set aside until it rises.
  3. Combine the 2 mixtures and add white flour.
  4. When you have added 4 to 5 cups, add liquid shortening.
  5. Continue to mix until the dough is just a little bit sticky.
  6. Cover with waxed paper and a towel.
  7. Let rise and punch down 3 times.
  8. Put in greased bread pans and let rise until doubled.
  9. Grease tops with melted butter.
  10. Bake at 400u0b0 for 3/4 hour.
  11. Makes 10 loaves.
