Scalloped Oysters

  1. Preheat oven to 400u0b0.
  2. Drain oysters; remove liquor.
  3. Coarsely crush wafers by hand.
  4. Melt 1/2 cup butter; combine with oyster liquor and cream.
  5. Butter a 7 x 7-inch casserole dish and line bottom with 1 cup crushed crackers.
  6. Lay one layer of oysters over crackers.
  7. Drizzle 1/3 of cream mixture over oysters. Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg, salt and pepper.
  8. Cover oysters with 1 cup crushed crackers.
  9. Put second layer of oysters on crackers; repeat with 1/3 of cream mixture.
  10. Once again, season.
  11. Top with final cup crushed crackers; drizzle remaining cream mixture over all.
  12. Dot with butter.
  13. Bake for 20 minutes.
