Mrs Weatherstone'S Cloutie Dumpling

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and add some milk to soften the mixture. Transfer the mixture to a cotton sheet, pillow case or boiling bag (clout). Tie top securely and place in a large stock pot that has a plate on the bottom. The plate will prevent burning of the dumpling. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cook gently for 3 hours. Carefully remove and turn out onto a plate. Sprinkle with sugar or let cool and slice. Sliced dumpling can be stored frozen between freezer wrap. When serving for breakfast thaw the dumpling slices and saute briefly.
