Gyros (Turkey)
- 3 lbs ground turkey (not the leanest)
- 6 cloves garlic, the bigger and fresher the better
- 4 1/2 t dried oregano leaves, crushed
- 1 T onion powder
- 1 T salt
- 2 1/4 t pepper
- Tomato, cut into thin slices
- Onion, thinly sliced
- Lettuce, shredded (optional)
- Crumbled Feta Cheese
- Restaurant style pitas (flatbread)
- Cucumber Yogurt Sauce
- 3 1/2 c. plain, low fat Greek yogurt
- 1 t. salt
- 1 c. cucumber, seeded & finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic
- 2 t olive oil (optional)
- 1 T fresh dill, chopped
- 2-3 mint leaves, chopped
- 1 T lemon juice
- Stir all ingredients and let sit 2-3 hours before serving.
- In a large bowl, combine turkey, garlic, dreied oregano, onion powder, salt & pepper. Mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into six oval 1/2 inch thick patties.
- Place patties on a rack in broiler pan so surface of meat is 3-4 inches from heat. Broil 8-10 minutes each side or until no longer pink. Carve each patty into thin, diagonal slices. Place turkey, tomato, onion, lettuce in each pita. Serve with cucumber yogurt sauce topped with feta cheese. Wrap in foil to serve.
