Apple-Licious Dumplings
- Crust:
- 5 1/3 c. flour
- 2 tsp. salt
- 2 c. shortning
- 1 c. cold water
- Sauce:
- 2 c. dark brown sugar
- 2 c. water
- 4 tblsp. butter
- 1/2 tsp. Vietnamese Extra Fancy Cassia cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 8 baking apples(I like McIntosh)
- 6 oz. package of craisens
- 1/2 c. cinnamom sugar
- Crust:
- Prepare crust first. Mix salt into flour. Cut shortning into flour with a pastry cutter. Slowly add chilled water; adding just enough to get a dough that holds together.Carfully form a ball with dough and then let it rest while you prepare sauce and apples.
- Sauce:
- Place sauce ingredients in medium size pan, mix together. Bring contents to a boil and remove from heat.
- Apples:
- core apples
- Assembly Instructions:
- 1. Take a small ball of dough, just slightly smaller than the apple and roll into a square big enough to wrap around apple.
- 2. Place apple on square. Add craisens to hole in middle of apple until half full, then add cinnamon sugar until it covers craisens, add more craisens until hole is lightly stuffed with craisens. Add cinnamon sugar again until no more will pour into craisens.
- 3. Take corners of pastry square that are diagonal from one another and press them gently towards apple, repeat with other corners.
- 4. Place in 9x13" pan as dumplings are assembled.
- 5. Pour sauce over dumplings
- 6. Bake for about 50 minutes or until pastry is golden brown.
- 7. Serve warm.Vanilla ice cream is excellent accompaniment. Cover to store any leftovers.
