Boston Brown Bread
- 1 1/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 tsp. soda
- 1 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 1/4 c. graham flour
- 1 c. chopped California walnuts
- 1 egg
- 1/3 c. packed brown sugar
- 1/2 c. light molasses
- 3/4 c. buttermilk
- 3 Tbsp. melted shortening
- Sift all-purpose flour with baking powder, soda and salt. Stir in graham flour and walnuts.
- Beat egg lightly; beat in brown sugar, molasses, buttermilk and shortening.
- Stir into dry mixture, just until all of the flour is moistened.
- Spoon into 3 greased 1-pound size cans or 3 small loaf pans.
- Bake at 350u0b0 for 45 minutes, or until bread tests done.
- Let stand for 10 minutes. Turn out onto wire racks.
- Serve warm or cold.
