Grandmother'S Irish Soda Bread

  1. In a bowl, sift the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.
  2. Mix in caraway seed.
  3. With a pastry blender or knife, cut in shortening to the consistency of cornmeal.
  4. Add raisins.
  5. Stir in combined buttermilk, egg and soda.
  6. Mix until just moistened. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently until smooth. Form a round loaf.
  7. Place dough in a well-greased pan.
  8. Cut a cross about 1/2 inch deep.
  9. Bake until golden at 375u0b0, 1 hour or longer.
  10. Smother the outside of the loaf with butter or margarine while still hot to give it extra flavor.
  11. Yield:
  12. 1 round loaf.
