Homemade Bread

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water.
  2. Add sugar, salt and shortening.
  3. Stir until dissolved.
  4. Add half the flour; beat until smooth.
  5. Mix in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough that does not stick to sides of bowl.
  6. Turn onto floured surface.
  7. Knead 8 to 10 minutes.
  8. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
  9. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  10. Punch down dough.
  11. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
  12. Divide dough into 4 parts.
  13. Shape into loaves.
  14. Place in greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch pans.
  15. Let rise until doubled, about 30 to 35 minutes.
  16. Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
