Homemade Bread
- 2 pkg. active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 c. warm water (110~ to 115~)
- 6 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. salt
- 1/4 c. shortening, melted and cooled
- 12 to 12 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water.
- Add sugar, salt and shortening.
- Stir until dissolved.
- Add half the flour; beat until smooth.
- Mix in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough that does not stick to sides of bowl.
- Turn onto floured surface.
- Knead 8 to 10 minutes.
- Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
- Cover and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Punch down dough.
- Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
- Divide dough into 4 parts.
- Shape into loaves.
- Place in greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch pans.
- Let rise until doubled, about 30 to 35 minutes.
- Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
