Monkey Bread

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and cut in shortening with two knives or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  2. Add enough water to make a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured board until smooth and elastic.
  3. Pinch off enough dough to make 1 1/2-inch balls.
  4. Roll or slap back and forth from hand to hand until each ball is flat 4-inch round.
  5. Fry in skillet in 1/4-inch deep hot fat at 400u0b0 until lightly brown on both sides, turning once.
  6. Bread becomes puffy as it fries.
  7. Drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot, plain or with jam, honey or favorite tortilla topping.
