Spicy Meat Loaf Americana
- 3 Tbsp. salad oil
- 1 large onion, diced
- 1 large green pepper, diced
- 1 large celery stalk, diced
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
- salt
- 2 slices white bread
- 2 lb. ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
- Worcestershire
- hot pepper sauce (optional)
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- celery leaves (for garnish)
- About 2 hours before serving, in 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat, in hot salad oil, cook onion, pepper, celery and garlic until vegetables are tender and lightly browned, stirring occasionally.
- Remove 2 tablespoons vegetable mixture; reserve for garnish.
- Into vegetables remaining in skillet, stir nutmeg and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.
- Cook 1 minute.
- Remove skillet from heat.
