Apple Upside-Down Cake(16 Servings)

  1. Combine apples, 1 cup sugar, butter and cinnamon in a saucepan.
  2. Cook until apples are tender, stirring frequently. Pour into well-greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
  3. Sprinkle nutmeats over apple mixture into pan.
  4. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
  5. Cream together shortening with sugar.
  6. Blend in eggs.
  7. Beat well.
  8. Combine milk and vanilla; add alternately with dry ingredients to creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  9. Spread over apples in pan.
  10. Bake in 350u0b0 oven 35 to 40 minutes or until done.
  11. Remove from oven.
  12. Turn cake upside-down over large serving plate.
  13. Let stand a few minutes, then remove pan.
  14. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
