Apple Dumplings
- 6 - 8 medium apples(depending on size, peeled and cored
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Butter
- Pastry:
- 2 1/4 cup sifted flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 7 - 8 tablespoons ice water
- Syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups water
- Sift flour and salt together. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle water and mix with fork.
- Roll pastry dough 1/8" thick; cut into circles large enough to cover apples. Place apple in center of dough. Fill cavity with sugar & a little cinnamon. Top with a pat of butter. Fold pastry up to enclose apple and moisten the top of the dough to keep it closed. Place completed apples in greased baking dish. Chill.
- Heat the oven to 500 degrees. While the apples chill, place all syrup ingredients in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil & boil for three minutes. Allow to cool slightly.
- Pour warm syrup over chilled dumplings and bake for ten minutes at 500. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake approximately 35 minutes more.
