Apple Dumplings

  1. Heat the first 4 ingredients to boiling point; add butter. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
  2. Cut in shortening; add milk all at once.
  3. Stir until flour is moistened.
  4. Roll 1/4-inch thick; cut in 6-inch squares.
  5. Place an apple on each square; season with sugar, cinnamon and butter.
  6. Moisten the edges; fold corners to middle and pinch together.
  7. Place dumplings 1 inch apart in baking dish.
  8. Pour syrup over them and bake about 35 minutes at 375u0b0.
  9. Place cinnamon candy or cube of red jelly on top of each one.
  10. Serve with milk or cream.
