Red Devils Food Cake

  1. Stir shortening to soften.
  2. Gradually add 1 c. sugar, creaming together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add salt and vanilla.
  4. Combine 1/3 c. cold water and cocoa, beat into creamed mixture.
  5. Add flour alternately with 1 c. cold water, beating well after each addition. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form.
  6. Gradually add 3/4 c. sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
  7. Fold meringue into batter. Combine soda and 1/3 c cold water.
  8. Stir to dissolve soda.
  9. Stir into batter.
  10. Mix well.
  11. Bake in 2 paper lined 9 x 1 1/2 inch round pans in moderate oven. 350u0b0 for 30 minutes or until done.
