Puffy Cheese Bake
- 4 slices of bread (I usually make my own Cheese & Onion bread); any kind of sliced bread will do
- Softened butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup half & half (also works well with skim milk)
- 2 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard (optional)
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 2-3 good shakes of cayenne pepper
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar is best)
- Spread softened butter over bread slices. Cut each slice into triangles. Line sides of 8x8 baking dish with some of the triangles, creating a crown effect. Line the bottom with the remaining slices.
- Beat eggs slightly, mix in remaining ingredients. Pour over bread in baking dish. Cook uncovered at 350 for 40 minutes.
- Remove and let stand for 10 minutes.
