Maureen Samara'S Baklawa Recipe
- 2 Bs. baklawa dough
- 2 Bs. rendered butter*
- Filling:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 Bs. chopped walnuts
- 4-5 drops mazahar (can by at the drugstore)
- Mix the filling ingredients together. Unwrap and roll out the dough and count the sheets. One half of the number of sheets plus 6 sheets will be for the top and the remainder for the bottom layers. Melt butter until warm. Butter the pan and place the first sheet on it. Brush butter over the top of the sheet, then place second sheet and brush butter over it. Continue until you have finished the sheets for the bottom layers. Spread the filling evenly over these layers. Then start covering with the remaining dough, making sure butter is brushed between each layer. Pour remaining butter on top layer. Cut into diamond or square shape to desired size. Place in oven for 1.5 hours at 350?. After the baklawa is removed form the oven, allow to cool for 5 minutes. Pour 2 cups cold syrup over baklava.

- 1 lb. rendered butter (melted)
- 1 lb. ground walnuts (or pistachios)
- 1/4 cup sugar

- Mix walnuts and sugar and put aside. Lay dough on table. Take a sheet, separate and brush with melted butter, repeating until you have four buttered sheets, then spread /2 cup of walnut mixture in line on bottom of dough and start rolling (not too tights) until you have along roll and remove to buttered tray and brush top with butter. Repeat until the whole amount of sheets are used. If you like a thinner roll, use three sheets. After the whole pound is rolled brush lightly with butter and cut diagonally with sharp knife. Bake in 400 oven until lightly brown then lower oven to 350 for 15 minutes or until golden in color. Remove from oven and wait 5 minutes, then pour cooled syrup on rolls until the syrup is all used up.
