Hulupki(Cabbage Rolls)

  1. Cook rice; set aside to cool.
  2. Cut out core of cabbages and discard.
  3. Parboil cabbage in large pan.
  4. Drain water and cool. Saute chopped onion in butter or oleo until golden brown.
  5. In large bowl or pan, mix together ground meat, onion, rice and egg.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Core each cabbage leaf vein as you begin to make your rolls.
  8. Put about a heaping tablespoonful of mixture on each leaf; roll up and tuck in sides.
  9. If you have extra cabbage (which I do, some leaves are too small to roll), chop it up and put in bottom of roaster pan.
  10. Arrange cabbage rolls on top of chopped cabbage.
  11. Cut sausage into small pieces and put in roaster with rolls.
  12. Add sauerkraut, tomatoes, tomato sauce, ketchup, vinegar and brown sugar.
  13. Add water until almost covering rolls.
  14. Cover pan and cook in oven at 350u0b0.
  15. Cook about one hour.
