Dee'S Chocolate Torte Cake
- 3/4 cup sifted flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 Tbsp water
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 pint heavy cream, whipped
- Chocolate shavings
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Sift together first four ingredients; set aside.
- Beat egg whites until very foamy. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup sugar; beat to stiff peak stage.
- In a separate bowl, beat egg yolks until lemon-colored; add remaining sugar. Beat egg yolks until very thick. Blend in water and vanilla. Alternately fold in flour mixture and beaten egg whites in 3 additions.
- Spread in two 9" round cake pans, lined on bottom with well-greased brown paper. Bake at 375 about 20 minutes or until cake tests done. Turn out on racks, remove paper and let cool.
- Split layers in half. Stack with whipped cream between each layer and on top. Chill. Before serving, garnish with shaved chocolate.
