Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings

  1. Make syrup of sugar, water, cinnamon and nutmeg; add butter. Pare apples and remove core with peach pitter, leaving apple whole. Sift flour, salt and baking powder; cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Roll 1/4 inch thick and in 5-inch squares. Place apple on square of dough; fill center with cinnamon candies. Dot with butter, fold corners to center, pinch edges together and seal. Place an inch apart in greased baking pan. Pour over syrup. Bake in moderate oven at 375u0b0 for 35 minutes.
