Irish Soda Bread

  1. Preheat oven to 375u0b0.
  2. Sieve flour, baking powder and soda in a bowl.
  3. Add wheat germ and bran, sugar and salt and mix all together.
  4. Crumb in margarine or butter.
  5. Make a well in the center of bowl and pour in buttermilk (and beaten egg); mix well, until mixture is one large piece of dough.
  6. Sometimes extra buttermilk may be needed.
  7. Turn onto greased tin.
  8. Press down until required shape is obtained.
  9. Make a cross on dough with a knife and brush top with a little milk.
  10. Bake for 45 minutes. Test with a skewer.
