German Sweet Chocolate Cake

  1. Melt chocolate in water; cool.
  2. Beat butter and sugar.
  3. Beat in egg yolks.
  4. Stir in vanilla and chocolate.
  5. Mix flour, soda and salt.
  6. Beat into chocolate mixture alternately with buttermilk. Beat the egg whites stiff; fold into batter.
  7. Grease and flour 3 9-inch cake pans; line bottoms of pans with waxed paper.
  8. Pour batter evenly into cake pans.
  9. Bake at 350u0b0 for 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  10. Cool 15 minutes; remove from pans to finish cooling on racks.
  11. Spread frosting between layers and over top.
