Steeplechase Eggs

  1. Remove crust from bread.
  2. Butter one side of bread with softened butter and set aside.
  3. Melt 1/2 cup butter.
  4. Add mushrooms and onions and saute over medium heat for 5 to 8 minutes or until tender.
  5. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Drain and set aside.
  7. Cook the sausage; drain and break into bite size pieces. In a buttered 7 x 11-inch shallow pan, layer half the bread with the buttered side down, mushrooms and onions, sausage, then cheese.
  8. Repeat.
