Seed Cake For Birds
- bird seed
- raisins or currants
- sunflower seeds
- hen scratch
- chopped or whole peanuts
- oatmeal
- cooked or uncooked rice
- dry cake scraps
- Pour hot, melted suet over the mixture until it is covered and put aside to set.
- Stir when it begins to harden and the seeds will be nicely distributed.
- Peanut butter can be stirred into the fat before pouring over the seeds.
- Turn out onto a tray when ready to use.
- This can also be prepared in half a coconut shell and hung from a tree.
- Several of these cakes can be made at one time and kept refrigerated or frozen until used.
- Seed eating birds (which includes most small birds around during the winter) will be attracted to this.
- Insect and fruit eaters, such as mockingbirds, like a cake made only with raisins and suet.
