Ultra Suburban Date Bars

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 9x13x2 inch baking pan. Line bottom with parchment. Using electric mixer beat 3 tablespoons butter in medium bowl to blend. Gradually add sugars and beat until combined (mixture will appear sandy) Add eggs 1 at a time beating well after each addition. Stir in milk and vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder salt and cinnamon in small bowl. Add to butter mixture and stir just until blended. Mix dates and walnuts together, separating any clumps of dates. Gently mix into batter.
  2. Transfer batter to prepared pan smooth top. Bake until top is brown and tester inserted in center comes out with a few moist crumbs still attached, about 33 minutes. Cool 10 minutes on rack. Run small sharp knive around pan sides to loosen cake. Place cookie sheet atop pan. Using oven mitts hold sheet to pan and turn over so cake drops onto sheet. Remove pan, peel off parchment. Place wire rack atop cake. Invert so top side of cake faces up. Cool. Cut into bars. Sft powdered sugar over.
