French Apple Pie From Cynthia
- Pastry for 1 crust pie
- 1/2 c sugar
- 1/2 c flour
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 5 c apples (Cortland or McIntosh) - peeled, cored, and cut into quarters
- Streusel topping: 1 c flour, 7 Tbsp butter, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (CB - I would add spices to this, including cloves and cardomom)
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Prepare streusel topping: combine flour, sugar, spices and cut in butter. Set aside.
- Assemble pie: Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, and cinnamon together - toss with apples. Turn into an unbaked prepared pastry-lined pie plate. Cover with streusel topping.
- Bake frozen piece for 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees & bake for additional 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 25 minutes. If crumb crust becomes too brown, protect with foil covering until apples are tender.
