Nanny'S Cake

  1. Cream butter.
  2. Gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  3. Combine flour and baking powder; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
  4. Mix after each addition.
  5. Stir in vanilla. Beat egg whites (at room temperature) until stiff peaks form; fold into batter.
  6. Pour batter into 4 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.
  7. Bake at 325u0b0 for 18 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans.
  9. Let cool completely on wire racks.
  10. (Layers are very tender and fragile, so handle them carefully.)
