Grandma Varian'S Paska Bread
- Mix together
- 1 1/2 cups scalded milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp yeast
- Stir in
- 2 eggs beaten
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 cup shortening or butter
- Add
- 4 cups flour, kneading the dough in as dough gets thicker
- Turn dough onto a well floured bread board, cover with a towel and let stand for 10 mins to tighten up, then knead the dough until it is smooth ans elastic. Usually takes 5 to 8 mins. If you need to, add a little flour so it is not sticky. Round up, put in a greased bowl turning once when you put it in to bring the greased side up. Cover with a towel and let rise (double) about 2 hours. Punch down and let rise again, about 30 mins. punch down again and let rest 15 mins. Divide and put in round, deep sided pans well greased. Fill 1/2 to under 2/3 full. cover and let rest about 1 hour.
- Take an egg yoke and add about 2 to 3 tbls of milk. Just before putting bread in oven spread mixture over the top.
- Bake at 350 for 45 mins until golden brown on top.
