Baked Cinnamon-Apple French Toast
- 2T unsalted butter, cubed
- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, cut in 1/4" slices
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
- 1 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 t ground nutmeg
- 6 slices thick bread, toasted
- 8 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 stick unsalted softened butter
- 1T honey
- 1). Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat until it starts to foam. Add the apples. Cook until tender, 10 mins. Remove from the heat. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- 2). Cut toast in half diagonally to make triangles. Arrange triangles, overlapping in a buttered 9" by 13" baking dish.
- 3). Beat eggs in a bowl. Whisk in sugar, milk, and vanilla. Pour over toast triangles. Spoon apples over the top. Cover, refrigerate overnight.
- 4). In the morning, take 1 stick of butter out of the refrigerator to soften. Heat oven to 350. Bake french toast, uncovered, until custard is set and doesn't shimmy when you shake pan. About 50-60 minutes. It will puff up and brown slightly. Remove from oven and let rest 10 mins. Serve with Honey Butter.
- To make the Honey Butter:
- While french toast is baking, beat 1 stick of unsalted softened butter in a bowl with a wooden spoon. Mix in a pinch of salt and 1T of honey. Pack into a ramekin and serve at room temp.
