Maraschino Cherry Cookies

  1. Place shortening, vanilla, sugar, brown sugar and egg in mixing bowl.
  2. Beat thoroughly.
  3. Add nuts and cherries; mix.
  4. Sift together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt.
  5. Divide into 2 portions.
  6. Add 1/2 to first mixture; mix well.
  7. Add remaining half; beat thoroughly.
  8. Knead dough with hands until smooth.
  9. Pack very firmly and shape into 2 bars (2 x 2-inch square).
  10. Wrap in waxed paper.
  11. Chill in refrigerator until firm. Cut in 1/8-inch slices; place on ungreased baking sheet.
  12. Bake in hot oven at 400u0b0 for 6 to 8 minutes.
  13. Makes 60 cookies.
