Black Walnut Cake

  1. Cream butter and shortening, gradually add sugar beating well @ medium speed. Add egg yolks 1 at a time beating well after each.
  2. In a small bowl combine buttermilk and soda.
  3. Add alternately flour and buttermilk mixture to creamed mixture in small amounts (begining and ending with flour).
  4. Beat in vanilla. Stir in walnuts and coconut, stirring well.
  5. Have egg whites @ room temp. Beat whites and cream of tarter till fluffy.
  6. Fold into batter.
  7. Pour batter into 3 pans and bake 22 - 25 min. @ 350'
  8. Frosting
  9. Cream butter and cream cheese. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
