Makranyi Family Pie Crust
- 4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 3/4 cups solid vegetable shortening
- 1 tablespoon white or cider vinegar
- 1 large egg
- Put flour, sugar, and salt in large bowl and mix well with fork.
- Add shortening and mix with fork (or pastry blender:) until ingredients are crumbly.
- In a small bowl or measuring cup, beat together with fork the water, vinegar, and egg.
- Combine the two mixtures, stirring with fork or hands until all ingredients are moistened.
- Divide dough into 4 round patties, wrap each with waxed paper and chill for at least one half hour.
- When ready to roll pie crust, lightly flour both sides of patty, put on lightly floured board or pastry cloth.
- Roll rolling pin in flour and then roll dough from center out, keeping pastry round. Roll until pastry is about two inches larger than an inverted pie pan.
- Either fold pastry or roll onto rolling pin and transfer to pie pan.
