Crummy Apple Pie
- 9 inch Pie Shell
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
- 2 or 3 tablespoons cold water
- Measure flour and slat into bowl. Cut-in shortening. Sprinkle water on mixture while tossing with fork. Roll dough on floured pastry cloth to 2 inches larger than 9 inch pie pan.
- Apple Filling:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 6 cups thinly peeled and sliced tart apples.
- Stir together dry ingredients. Mix with apples. Make topping and place on pie. Put pie on cookie sheet to catch drips.
- Crumb Topping:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup firm margarine
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- Put flour and sugar in bowl. Cut in margarine until mixture is crumbly.
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Bake for 50 minutes. Cover pie with foil after 40 minutes.
