Toffee Bars
- 1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 egg, separated
- 1/2 c. finely chopped California walnuts
- 1/4 lb. butter
- 1 c. packed brown sugar
- 2 eggs, slightly beaten
- 3/4 c. flour
- 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
- 1/2 c. chopped dates
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- dash of salt
- Melt butter in 8 or 9-inch pan.
- Remove from heat.
- Add remaining ingredients and beat with fork until mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Bake at 350u0b0 for about 35 minutes.
- Cut into squares or bars just a few minutes after removing from oven.
- (If it cools, it's very difficult to cut.)
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar if you like.
