Potatoes Au Gratin

  1. Heat oven to 375u0b0.
  2. Cook and stir onion in butter in 2-quart saucepan until onion is tender.
  3. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth and bubbly; remove from heat.
  4. Stir in half and half and 1 1/2 cups of cheese.
  5. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.
  6. Boil and stir 1 minute.
  7. Place potatoes in ungreased 1 1/2-quart casserole. Pour cheese sauce on potatoes.
  8. Bake, uncovered, until top is brown and bubbly, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.
  9. Mix remaining cheese and the bread crumbs.
  10. Sprinkle over casserole.
  11. Set oven control to broil.
  12. Broil 3 to 4 inches from heat until top is crusty and light brown.
  13. Makes 6 servings.
