Cantonese Beef Patties With Gai Lan
- 1 3/4 lbs ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 piece (3/4 inch) ginger, grated
- 1 None fresh small red Thai chili pepper, finely chopped
- 1 can (8 oz) water chestnuts, drained, rinsed and finely chopped
- 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh chives
- 1 None egg
- 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp plus 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, crushed
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 2 lbs gai lan (Chinese broccoli), coarsely chopped
- Combine ground beef, onion, ginger, chili pepper, water chestnuts, chives, egg, breadcrumbs, 1 tbsp hoisin sauce and two-thirds of the garlic in large bowl; shape mixture into eight patties.
- Combine 1 tbsp water, oyster sauce, 1/3 cup hoisin sauce and remaining garlic in small bowl. Reserve 1/4 cup hoisin mixture for serving.
- Brush patties with remaining hoisin mixture. Cook patties on heated oiled grill pan or large skillet until browned both sides and cooked through.
- Heat sesame oil on grill pan or skillet. Cook gai lan until wilted. Serve gai lan topped with patties; drizzle with reserved hoisin mixture.
