Karen Leonard'S Spice Cookies
- 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/3 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 egg white (later)
- Sift and measure flour; add salt, cream of tarter, baking soda, nutmeg and cinnamon.
- Sift together.
- In separate bowl, cream shortening and sugar.
- Add 1 egg and beat until creamy. Stir in milk and vanilla.
- Gradually add flour mixture.
- Chill in refrigerator about 2 hours or until easy to handle.
- Roll dough on floured surface to 1/4-inch or 1/8-inch thick.
- Cut with cookie cutters.
- Place on greased cookie sheet.
- Brush cut outs with beaten egg white and sprinkle with sugar, if desired.
- Bake at 375u0b0 for 10 minutes.
