Holiday Coffee Cake
- 1 c. milk, scalded
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 6 Tbsp. shortening
- 1 pkg. quick-acting yeast
- 3 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 egg, beaten
- melted butter
- 1 c. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 3/4 c. chopped nuts
- Combine scalded milk, salt, sugar and shortening.
- Mix yeast with half the flour.
- Add lukewarm scalded milk mixture.
- Beat well.
- Let rise until very light.
- Add egg and remaining flour. Mix well.
- Let rise.
- Roll dough into a rectangle on lightly floured board.
- Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Brush with melted butter; spread with cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle with chopped nuts.
- Roll up like jelly roll.
- Form into a ring on greased baking sheet.
- Pinch ends together to fasten.
- Using large scissors, cut ring around edge at 2-inch intervals, leaving inner edge in tact.
- Turn each to lie flat on the pan.
- Let rise.
