Pecan Danish
- 3 1/2 tbsp lard
- 18 oz white bread mix
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 None egg yolks
- 1 cup milk, warmed
- 1 cup pecans
- 4 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted, mixed with 3 tsp boiling water, to decorate
- Cut lard into bread mix until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add sugar. Mix together egg yolks and milk then mix into dry ingredients until smooth. Knead for 5 mins on a lightly floured work surface, until smooth. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place for 10 mins.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for 5 mins, until smooth. Shape into 3 - 5 inch logs. Braid together, using water to stick ends together. Place on a greased baking sheet and sprinkle with 1/2 cup pecans. Lightly cover with a sheet of oiled plastic wrap and leave in a warm place for 30 mins to rise.
- Preheat oven to 425u0b0F. Bake danish for 15 mins, until golden brown. Brush syrup over top, sprinkle with remaining nuts and bake for 5 mins. Drizzle with icing. Serve warm or cold.
