Swedish Cardamom Bread (Vetebröd)
- 2 env active dry yeast
- 1 1/3 cups lukewarm milk
- 4 1/3 cups flour
- 5 None cardamom pods, finely ground with a mortar and pestle
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 6 tbsp olive oil
- 1 None egg yolk, beaten with 3 tbsp water
- None None Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Dissolve the yeast in the milk. Mix the flour, cardamom, sugar, oil and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Add the yeast mixture and knead to form a smooth dough. Cover and let stand in a warm place for 45 mins until doubled in size.
- Roll out the dough on a floured work surface to a 14 x 10 inch rectangle. From one long side, cut the dough into 9 strands, leaving it joined at the top. Plait into 3 separate braids, then plait the 3 braids into 1 thick braid. Pinch the ends together. Place on a baking sheet. Cover and let stand for 20 mins.
- Preheat the oven to 325u0b0F. Brush the bread with the egg mixture.
- Bake for 20-25 mins until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cool on a wire rack.
